Awards & Commendations

This is a copy of the Chief Coastguards Commendation received by  Auxiliary in Charge  Philip Ralph from John Astbury Chief Coastguard for the rescue of a woman from the sea at North Bay, Scarborough on 6th February 1996

I hereby Commend

Philip Ralph

Auxiliary In Charge

Scarborough Coastguard Response Team

for

Meritorious Service

On 6 February 1996, for his part in the rescue of a woman from the sea at North Bay, Scarborough.

At 1238 MRSC Humber was alerted by members of the public that a woman had walked into the sea fully clothed at North Bay, Scarborough. Being closer to North Bay than to the Coastguard Rescue Equipment Store, Philip Ralph drove directly to the scene, where the casualty could be observed some 250 yards from shore.

With the assistance of a Police Officer, Philip Ralph entered the freezing sea and waded towards the casualty, who had clambered over the rocks and was clinging to a rocky outcrop. The casualty was in danger of being swept off the rocks by the rough seas and it was imperative that she was rescued immediately. When Philip Ralph reached the casualty he found her to be suffering from the effects of hypothermia and in an extremely distressed state and unable to help herself. Philip Ralph pulled the casualty through the water to the shore , where he was aided by a Police Constable.

The courage, determination and dedication to duty demonstrated by Philip Ralph was entirely in keeping with the finest traditions of the service and undoubtedly saved a life.

John Astbury

CHIEF COASTGUARD
